Lennar Homes Faces OSHA Fine for Lack of Fall Protection on Multi-Step Roof – Occupational Health and Safety

Following a recent investigation, OSHA filed charges against All Phase Roofing Inc. and Lennar Homes LLC for exposing workers to a fall hazard at a worksite in Boca Raton, Florida. On June 28, 2023, OSHA officers witnessed a lack of fall protection while All Phase Roofing employees were installing roofing membranes on the attached garage roofs of two residential buildings.
According to the press release, All Phase Roofing faces three repeat violations, including failure to provide fall protection, failure to inspect qualified personnel to ensure proper use of safety equipment and allowing roof construction to proceed without proper training in recognizing hazards.
In addition, All Phase Roofing was cited for three serious violations related to unsafe practices such as operating interior stairs without handrails, improperly using extension ladders and failing to properly train personnel in the use of ladders. OSHA proposed a fine of $159,117.
Lennar Homes, a homebuilder associated with this site, received a serious violation resulting in an $8,929 fine from OSHA for failing to inspect the site by a qualified person to ensure that employee safety equipment and stairwell railings were in place. are in place.
“Falls in construction remain the number one killer of workers, and All Phase Roofing is irresponsible by allowing workers to work on unprotected roofs. These types of hazards are well known, but we still see employers putting workers at risk and creating life-threatening working conditions. “,” Condell Eastmond, director of OSHA’s regional office in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said in a statement. “Like Lennar Homes, general contractors also have a responsibility to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of their subcontractors on the job site.”
Since 2012, OSHA has partnered with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on the Falls Prevention Campaign to increase awareness of common fall hazards and how to prevent them.
